Through the Hedgerow

Set at the edge of a pastoral meadow and backed by an aspen-clad hillside, this landscape was designed for hosts who delight in gathering, play, and surprise. Rather than placing the entertainment space immediately off the home, we designed the experience as a sequence of threshold and release. A boulder-and-stone slab staircase rises through layered perennial beds, tightening the approach before passing through a naturally arched gap in a wild serviceberry hedgerow. The experience shifts from intimate to expansive in a single step.

Beyond the threshold, a hidden bocce court and fire-lit patio open to wide pastoral views. Saw-cut, polished native boulders form sculptural seating tucked into meadow-inspired perennial plantings—an interplay of refinement and rawness that echoes the surrounding landscape. The planting palette blends cultivated drifts with native species, softening edges and anchoring the court within its setting rather than separating it from it.

A gravel path continues into the aspen grove, inviting exploration toward a tucked-away treehouse and extending the sense of play beyond the court itself. The result is a landscape of unfolding moments—tight and open, playful and serene—where gathering feels both intentional and discovered.
